5 things I love (June)

June 30, 2013 by Michelle Leave a Comment

1. My new stripy skirt

American Apparel maxi skirt
That’s not me, BTW. It’s the model. But I wish I had that white brick wall in my house, that would be sweet.

A few months ago I decided I need more maxi skirts in my life. They are long and flowy and make me feel lovely, and who doesn’t like feeling lovely? I must confess, I do it as often as I can.

So I found this sweet little number at Alternative Apparel, and what a roller coaster of emotion it has been…immediately crushed hard, then decided it was too spendy. So I just looked at it a lot, and showed the picture to people and said, “Someday I’ll buy this!”  Then one day I looked, and OH NO! It was gone! Sold out. Gone forever. But then, I looked again the next week, just to see if I liked the other color…and the one I wanted was back! In my size! ON SALE! Then I made it mine. (Isn’t that a lovely story? I sure think so.)

This color I bought is no longer available, but they have an absolutely lovely version with purple here.

2. An inspiring 90-year-old-woman

Don’t ask me how I ended up on the Huffington Post’s Post 50 section, because I surely don’t know. But I simply love this article written by 90-year-old woman about her thoughts on turning 90, and advice to us younger folks. I will give you a few of my chosen highlights, in her words:

  • “I’m not aware of being 90. I’m aware of feeling physically as good as I have ever felt and mentally even better.”
  • “Numbers and dwelling on age is a trap. There is no age, it’s living each moment to it’s fullest.”
  • “Yoga gives you a life you didn’t have yesterday. It’s a wakeup call to every cell in your body. Every muscle sits up and pays attention. I live to do yoga and I do it to live.”
  • “I have realized, that anything is possible, if you like who you are and what you do. Yes, anything is possible and even probable.”
  • “I’m driven but I’m driven by desire and that’s the formula. Desire is so powerful, like you are propelled as if from a canon. Desire to me is the driving force, but action is the result.”

Doesn’t she sound delightful? Don’t you just want to invite her over for tea and ask her to teach you everything she knows? Read the article here.

3. Home = on vacation

I read this article on Kendi Everyday and immediately loved every word of it. I’ll just share my favorite tidbit and let you go read the rest yourself:

“One day I was at my friend’s house, she was cooking dinner for us and I was wondering around her beautiful little home. Perfectly curated for their family, it sits on a couple of acres of tree-lined land. I told her how much I loved her house, how it reminded me of the Hill Country and then she said something that struck a chord with me. She said her home made her feel like she was always on vacation and how lucky she felt to live there.

There it was, so much truth in such a short sentence. She had figured it out. She saw her life for what it was and she loved it as it was. I truly believe we all have the chance to make our lives the way we want them to be, even in the best circumstances and in the worst.”

The sentiment makes me sigh with relief. “She saw her life for what it was, and she loved it as it was.” And you know me…what I love most is that this simple realization came about from seeing a beautiful home that was lovingly designed and carefully curated to take magnificent care of its inhabitants. What a wonderful perspective on home and life! Read the full article here.

4. Quinoa salad with feta, strawberries, cucumber and mint

This is my favorite new cold summer salad. It’s light and refreshing, but filling as a meal, and makes yummy leftovers the next day. (Also, this was the first time I’d made quinoa for myself, and I must say, I’m a big fan.) Get the recipe here.

5. My new favorite Pinterest board

Speaking of quinoa, that’s the name of My Imaginary Well-Dressed Toddler, the subject of my new favorite Pinterest board. (See what I did there? SMOOTH TRANSITION.)

A delightfully witty woman named Tiffany decided to take the pictures of super fashionable toddlers on Pinterest, and make them into a narrative about a little girl named Quinoa. Read it and laugh your face off.

Did I mention that Quinoa surfs? She does. She surfs.
