How old do you think these flowers are?
I’ll just tell you…they’re two weeks old! I bought them in a $5 bouquet at the grocery store two weeks ago. I weeded out the sorry-looking ones today, gave them a fresh cut and got to admiring how some of the flowers are still holding up. Here’s a look at the spider mum:
Not quite as fresh as the daisies (the petals are turning a bit brown at the edges in some places) but it still looks pretty darn good, especially from a distance.
Some flowers are wonderful because they’re delicate and beautiful and their time is short…like my favorite flower, the peony.
Other flowers are wonderful because they’re sturdy and cheery and keep going like the Energizer bunny. I like to call those the bang for your buck flowers; instead of lasting the standard week or so before they wilt and die, you get several bonus weeks to enjoy them in your home.
Spider mums and daisies are two of my favorite flowers with staying power. I learned this after Jon and I got married. My very talented aunt Diane did our flowers. Here’s a little peek at one of the centerpieces:
Gorgeous, right? After the wedding, Jon and I were packing up for our honeymoon at a cabin in northern Wisconsin, and I couldn’t walk away from the table of centerpieces empty handed. I took three vases with us in the car, and set them out in the cabin during our week away. They still looked good, so I took them home. Once a week I would weed out the dead flowers…but I tell you what, I still had daisies and spider mums for nearly a month after the wedding.
That is how I learned the lasting power of these two beauties, and I always look for them when I’m buying a flower arrangement.
I set the daisies next to my laptop today while I was working. Charlie liked them, too.
Yes, he’s draped over my arm and leaning on the table (which he’s not allowed on, but I figure the top half of his body is okay, right. It’s so darn cute. I’m sure it sends him mixed messages that this is okay, but the second his back feet touch the table I bark at him. But I digress.)
Total relaxation.
