I was going through cookbooks not too long ago, doing my weekly meal planning, and came across this note in a hand-me-down cookbook from my mom:
That’s her writing telling me the Beef Stew was terrible. This made me giggle, because the next cookbook I picked up had this little note, written by me about some muffins:
I obviously picked up this gem of a tip from her, which is this:
WRITE IN YOUR COOKBOOKS!
If it’s bad, if it’s good, if it’s your son’s favorite, if you should double the recipe next time, if it has way too much sugar, if you made it for your husband’s birthday, write it down!
As soon as we were given library cards, we all learned not to write in books. But this is the huge exception to the rule, because you’ll be doing yourself (and anyone who someday inherits your recipes) a huge disservice by leaving your cookbooks in mint condition.
What if Mom hadn’t written their opinion on that soup? What if I had tried it, and it was terrible? That won’t do. Life’s to short to make terrible recipes twice.
But the good ones. You need to remember to come back to those.
Do you write in your cookbooks, too?
