Ahh, it finally feels like winter. Minnesota was without snow until just a couple weeks ago. The last time we went this far into winter without snow was…never, as far as I can remember. It’s Sunday evening, and I just got home from having dinner with my husband and his mom. It’s all slippery and treacherous outside because of some mild freezing rain, and it made me think, it’s winter

It’s like 1984 all over again
No, it’s not an Orwell reference. My mom was going through her closets not too long ago and sent over a box of clothes, dolls and miscellaneous things of mine she has kept since I was a baby. I came across this darling little calendar in the box: I got to looking at the dates, and realized that they match up with 2012. Leap year and everything! So I looked it
Another reason to love an old, old house
My hubby and I bought a century-old Victorian home just over 2 years ago. It’s big and quirky and historic and wonderful. (It also has leaky windows, worn floors and until this summer was home to several dozen bats. But I like to accentuate the positive.) As we tackle the projects one by one, it’s such fun to uncover new things. A house that’s twice the combined age of its
Easy focaccia bread + 10 tips & adaptations
This is one of the first recipes I tried when I started making bread from scratch about three years ago. I’ve made it dozens of times since I found it, and, unlike most bread recipes I’ve attempted, I have never managed to mess it up beyond saving. (Ask my husband about the rock-hard ugly looking loaves we’ve thrown away on my various experiments.) Plus, it comes together quickly (no need to
Favorite finds: I love spray paint edition
This week’s favorite find is actually a small collection of items in our foyer. I really like our front entry because it’s quite functional and easy to keep clean, mostly thanks to this little setup. (Plus, the curved wall makes me swoon.) The table itself is a cute little console that my grandparents gave us as a wedding gift. The vase, tray and flowered doily were all picked up while Jon
Hello, 2012!
The passage of time never fails to blow my mind. Before you know it, it’s December 31 and time to close the chapter on another year. Looking back on 2011 makes me happy. My husband and I settled into our second year of marriage with the delightful conclusion that we are both rather wonderful at choosing a life mate. We have both been working on slowing down so we don’t feel
New discovery: real hot chocolate
I learned how to make real hot chocolate this week from the Pioneer Woman*. I’ve made it twice, and have decided it’s the most wonderful thing. Her original recipe is here, complete with beautiful, in-action photos, but I will sum it up for you in 50 words or less: Real Hot Chocolate 1 part half & half (don’t let it trouble you. So worth the calories.) 1 part milk (I
Favorite Finds: Holiday glasses
Last week I introduced Favorite Finds, a new series on my blog featuring treasures I’ve collected over the years while shopping vintage. This week’s feature is special to me for sentimental reasons. A few years ago my mom gave me a wonderful gift of four holly berry tumblers that had belonged to my dad’s parents, Lee and Berta. My parents have the same set, and my mom was looking to
It’s the little things
My afternoon is absolutely spectacular. It’s because of this guy: That’s Charlie. Curled up in a ball on my lap. That’s his foot, next to his head. Every once in a while, he covers his eyes with his little paw to block out the light. Right now, he’s making a perfect circle with his body, except the one leg sticking out. I’m working at home today in my living room.
