Everybody needs to clean their closet every once in a while. After a certain amount of time, who really knows what’s in there anymore? I hate that feeling…I want to know exactly what’s in there, and exactly where it is. Because it’s probably time to leave, and I don’t have extra minutes to dig through a pile. Which has been happening a lot lately.
Thus, the mess. It’s a funny thing about organizing that the best way to get started is to make a HUGE mess. Unfortunately, I was too deep into this project when I realized I forgot to take a true “before” picture. So you get the stunning image of the “during,” right after I pulled everything out of the closet and onto the floor. But trust me…the “before” wasn’t a whole lot better.
Yesterday I washed nearly every piece of clothing I own. Because some of the clothes in the pile are being packed away for summer, and others will be leaving my residence permanently, on to a new home and out of my way. So I needed everything to be fresh and clean so it can get where it’s going.
Fast-forward to this afternoon…
I sorted and piled into keep, giveaway, store for winter and try on boxes. Normally, I save the try on pile for a different day, but I was feeling particularly ambitious today and went at it. Ended up keeping about a third of them and tossing the rest into the second of the “clothes to give away” boxes.
The keepers were piled into the closet in an orderly fashion. See those hangers? Two fingers apart, just like they’re supposed to be according to all of the closet-organizing articles I’ve ever read.
And if you’ve never arranged your hanging clothes by color, let me get on my soap box and say that you should try it. Before I started, I thought it was crazy. But then I did it once and realized how wonderful it is. Because if I need my red shirt, I know right where to go. If it’s not with the other red shirts, then that means it’s either on my floor or in the laundry. Smart system, that color sorting.
And on the left, you’ll see a picture of the cube shelf. See that stack of scarves on top? I’m very enthusiastic about those scarves, because last week, I watched this video. I’m going to wear one tomorrow. I’m thinking the infinity.
I don’t know about you, but I feel that anytime you can create order out of chaos, that’s a good day.
