Since I started this blog and started selling on Etsy, I’ve been learning a lot about taking better photos, both by trial and error and by reading articles. The biggest thing I’ve learned so far is this: There are a million things I don’t know about lighting. Until I can solve my ignorance on the subject, I always get the best results in natural daylight with no flash. This one simple rule will make an incredible improvement in your photos.
When I was taking snapshots for the pumpkin pie spice post last week, I accidentally left the flash on for one shot. The comparison of the two photos made me think, what a great illustration of why natural light is better!
The photo on the right is…interesting. All the corners are darkened, the jar has dark edges, the spice looks flat and orange-y. The photo on the left? It looks just like real life. And isn’t that the point?
Moral of my photography story: If you don’t know what you’re doing, use natural light. Your photo will look better.
